NICK FOLLOWED ALEX back into the dining room and helped him clear the table. Alex put away the food into little containers and placed them into the refrigerator. “I know what I’m having for lunch tomorrow.”

“Can I take the scallops?”

“Absolutely. I’ll pack you a lunch.”

“Aw, thanks, Mom.” Nick kissed him on the cheek. Alex turned and caught Nick’s lips, still basking in their after-sex euphoria. Alex backed Nick against the counter and devoured his lips as Nick leaned back.

“Dessert.”

Keeping their distance from each other, Alex washed the dishes and Nick dried and put them away where Alex instructed him. It felt domestic, and Nick liked it. He was falling for Alex. Never had anyone made love to him before. Alex made him feel special. Alex was the special one.

When the food was put away and dishes done, Alex pulled the most amazing thing from his oven. A glass dish contained layers of fruit, a white creamy substance, and a thin crust, covered in a meringue topping.

“Holy cow, that looks amazing.”

“It’s my own creation.”

“Alex.” Nick stopped. He’d already said his peace. He wanted to do whatever he could to help Alex reach his true dream, but he didn’t want to push.

Alex smiled, and laid the dessert on the kitchen island. They sat on the high chairs, feeding each other bites. It was the perfect ending to the perfect date.

“This is better than…” Nick almost said sex, but sex with Alex was beyond anything he’d ever experienced with anyone else. Alex was so caring and made Nick feel—loved. That was a scary word, love. He thought he’d been in love a couple of times, but it was just lust. He never wanted to do domestic things with anyone else, but this felt natural.

“Tell me about your family.” Nick wanted to know everything about this man.

“Well,” Alex began. “Bob and Martha Michaels aren’t the Covingtons.”

That has to be a good thing, doesn’t it? Nick wondered. He still hadn’t told Alex everything.

“I grew up in the suburbs near Saint Louis and my parents are both working class. They did well. We had a nice house. My dad’s a mechanic. He owns his own shop and does a pretty good business.”

“That’s great, Alex.”

“I think that’s why he wanted me to go to business school. He always wanted to get a degree, but never had the time or money. He didn’t want me having any regrets.” Alex seemed sad as he told the story.

“They care about you.” Nick felt a pang of jealousy.

“I know.” Alex shrugged. “My mom works for an accounting firm as an administrative assistant. She hates it, I think. She’s had many bosses over the years; some good, others complete nightmares. Again, that’s why they wanted me to get a degree and become the boss.” He shrugged again.

“They sound like good people, Alex.”

“They’re awesome, but they never understood my dream.”

“They didn’t want you to be unhappy.”

“They think money will make me happy.”

“You’re an adult on your own, Alex. Don’t make their mistakes by pushing your dream away before it is too late.
